insomnia?

night sky - stock.xchng

Ever had insomnia where you toss and turn at night for what seems like hours on end?  You keep looking at the clock and the more you realize that time is slipping by and you can’t sleep, the more stressed you get because you know you have to get up at dawn.

If so, here are a couple things you can try.

  1. First, check your sleep hygiene.  This pretty much means that you need to prepare your bedroom for sleeping.  Keep your room free of clutter and eliminate sound.  You don’t  want to have a TV or radio going all night long.  Your room should be at a comfortable temp, the bed should be comfortable and the sheets should smell fresh and clean.
  2. Keep your bed for sleep and sex only.  Do not move your laptop or your work station to your bed.
  3. Try reading a little, and make sure your reading material is restful and not something that is going to give you anxiety.
  4. Don’t eat too late, typically the rule is no food after 8:00.
  5. Try drinking an herbal tea at night like chamomile tea.
  6. When all else fails and I have been tossing and turning for about an hour, I take Valerian root or Melatonin which are both natural supplements.  The Valerian root helps take the edge off a little and is sometimes found in tea, and the Melatonin has me sleeping within a few minutes with no hangover feeling in the AM.
