The above stained glass was created by Marc Chagall and dedicated to the United Nations in 1964 as a memorial to Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary-General of the UN who died in a plane crash in 1961. NPR had a clip about cross stitching the other day. I thought to myself, how often you hear a clip about cross stitching on the news. It was a story about Joanna Lopianowski-Roberts from Junction Texas, who designed the Sistine Chapel in crossstitch. I lived in Florence, Italy for about a year before marrying my husband. During my stay, I read the book “The Agony and the Ecstasy” by Irving Stone about the life of Michelangelo Buonararroti. What an amazing book to have read while actually in the city of Florence.
