“The powerful vibration of the drum can awaken a man’s soul.” We rented this movie on the recommendation of my son as he heard about it in his Spanish class. This movie addresses the hardships of mental illness and I wish there were more movies out there like this as mental illness is an issue were society often pretends as though it does not even exist. My family was getting tired of foreign films and having to read their way through a movie, so I got them to agree on an Australian film where at least they understood the language. I really didn’t know what to expect when I sat down to watch this movie. This was a heart warming movie about a Danish man named Keld who basically didn’t have a clue on how to live or enjoy life. Thus his wife of many years, simply gave up on their relationship and one day just packed up her bags and left. This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. From the vivid blues and reds and oranges, to the exhilarating music that vibrates even your heart, to the astounding classical Indian Kuchipudi dancing by the lovely Mamatha Bhukya who played 14 year old Vanaja. A charming and inspiring story which shows you that no matter what your age, you can still have dreams and as long as you have life, you have the power to make them come true. I think it is the music indeed that made this movie so absolutely lovable and made you realize while listening to it, that what some people may see as dysfunctional is to others completely normal, and what others see as completely normal is actually quite dysfunctional. This is the kind of movie that really makes you stop and take another look at a person before making an opinion without knowing the story beneath. |
